Too Late

By Aarron Mondello

21/12/2017

It’s too late for the rain to fall
Down on a child’s tomb
Like tears wetting heavens floor
Soak into her earthen womb

It’s too late for the moon to light
The path for its nighttime kin
For here he sits in his room alone
Fresh cuts upon his skin

It’s too late for the sun to shine
Down on an old man’s face
Confused, scared and alone
He does not recall this place

It’s too late for the wind to blow
The hair of a sickly mother
One last time she closes her eyes
On this world and flies to another

But it’s not too late for those who are left
Behind to mend their hearts
For though the soul is now bereft
They remain forever in the hearts.

The Ruined Halls

By Aarron Mondello

10/12/2017

Shadows crawled
Across the walls
Wearing the face of men
The broken bricks
Laying thick
About the rotted floors
Broken glass
Twinkling shards
Still hung in every window frame
And through the ruin
To a sombre
Sung by the wind a’howling
Trapped forever
Always dancing
Moved the Shades of the Past

Forrest marching
Ever closer
Towards the cracked brown walls
Wood beams rotting
Gaping chasms
Where termites ate the floors
Bleached white bones
Of little creatures
Stacked in one quiet corner
Yawning mouths
Leading deeper
Rot has devoured all the doors
Still, trapped forever
Always dancing
Moved the Shadows of the Past

Where flowers grew
In every hue
Now was dry and barren
And the path
Out the front
Was all but overgrown
Any gardens
That ever grew
Have long been choked by lawn
Only crows
Live in the beams
And shadows of the attic ruins
While trapped forever
Always dancing
Moved the Shades of the Past

Where little children
Used to run
Now there is only settled dust
All the halls
The voices stilled
Have become the den of rodents
Nothing left
All is gone
Gone to rubble, ruin and rust
Yet through the ruin
To a sombre tune
Sung by the wind a’howling
Trapped forever
Always dancing
Moved the Shadows of the Past.

Memories of a place

By Aarron Mondello

6/12/2017

It’s funny how a place
Can bring clarity of the mind
Sent across the ages
From a Once Upon A Time

Walking through this place
I’m assaulted by the past
Some memories I wish would fade
Some I’m glad still last

As the winds blow up a song
A ode to yesteryear
I realise I no longer belong
In any space around here

Familiar faces seen
Staring right through me
I’ve outgrown this place
And it’s moved on from me

And where once I thought
Coming here would leave me
Anxious and distraught
I am feeling light and free

For in this place of the past
My heart no longer rests
And while my memories here will last
I like my hearts new home the best.

The Newly Departed

By Aarron Mondello

1/12/2017

Alone here I sit
The newly departed
Leaving behind
Those broken hearted

As through a window
I stare looking in
No breath do I take
No blood of the living

No sun on my skin
For skin I have none
No feeling in hands
Bodiless, numb

No emotion in me
No anger seething
No joy or jealousy
At those still breathing

No tears to be shed
At least not by me
From all feeling in death
I am suddenly freed

Like a soft breeze
I now roam this land
A breeze that once was
A real bleeding man.

What would you do?

By Aarron Mondello

29/11/2017

What would you do
If you woke up one day
To find all you’d known
Had been spirited away

All of your family and friends
In some unknown place
No where to be seen
Not one familiar face

Only strangers eyes
Everywhere that you walk
Each one as lifeless
As body outlined in chalk

Even the houses you pass
Look different and strange
Did god reach down from the clouds
And your world rearrange

Would you search for your family
Would you look for your friends
Or would you mourn then accept
Your old life has come to an end

Now what would you do
If you woke up one night
Tied to a cold table
With no one in sight

A light flickering weak
Yellow above your head
A small bench to the left
Fills you with dread

A scalpel and forceps
A knife and a hook
To terrified to stare
But where else do you look

A figure appears
At the edge of the gloom
Blood spatters their apron
Looking like roses in bloom

What would you do
When they pick up the knife
Would you hope to go quietly
Or beg for your life

Tell me what would you do
If one sunny afternoon
You happen to look up
And saw a crack in the moon

The tides would crazy
Without their guiding hand
Looters and violence
Ravage the land

All morals thrown out
It’s now flight or fight
In this destructive new world
Only meanest survive

The weak are cast down
And ruled over as slaves
Bent, broken and used
For the rest of their days

Would you fight to survive
And kill to remain on your feet
Would you live as property
Or one of the “elite”

Now just once more I ask
What would you do
If you looked about yourself
To find all your dreams had come true

Terror and fear
Still thriving abroad
But in your perfect kingdom
You are the lord

No goal is there left
You’ve achieved them all
Testaments to your success
Adorned every wall

Would a feeling so hollow
Spread through your chest
Now all your dreams have come true
There’s not one of them left

Would you relax and enjoy
The kingdom you’ve built
Would you see those less fortunate
And feel any guilt

How would you cope
If your life suddenly changed
Adapt or accept
Or madness deranged.

My life, My Tapestry

By Aarron Mondello

27/11/2017

All the pieces were on the ground
Of a life that was lied to me
And whenever I tried to walk
I sliced and cut my feet
On the the shards scattered around
The shards of broken memories

I began to pick the pieces up
Tried to find how they all fit
Tried to match the edges up
But they refused to knit
There was something missing in this puzzle
That held all these little bits

It was like trying to write a story
When your pen has no ink
It was like trying to keep it all together
When you’re so close to the brink
It forced me to stop and look
To stop and really think

I saw nothing around at first
When I stopped to stare
Nothing there was in my life
That made me want to care
But bit by bit I began to see
What was really there

I noticed first the sun warmed me
So I can’t have been dead
Then the sounds of their voices
Rose a joyous rapture in my head
And soon the happy memories returned
From all the years that had fled

It was hard and long the path I walked
To find the beauty again
To hear the simple joy there is
In the sound of falling rain
And to defy and defeat the deep belief
That I was destined for only pain

But now I stand before you
Cradling my broken bits
I’ve learned to love the damage done
And the way it all seems to fit
Into this beautiful tapestry of my life
That only I can weave and knit.

I’m Trying

By Aarron Mondello

27/11/2017

I’m trying to see a different view
Here’s a little bit of what I’m trying to do
I’m trying get my work out there
I’m trying to act like I’m not scared
I’m to show rejection is fine
I’m trying to share these worlds of mine
I’m trying to show a side of me
One that no one before has seen
I’m trying to let him out the cage
Where he’s lived all along, the solitary sage
I’m trying believe in the road I travel
I’m trying to prepare in case it unravels
I’m trying to see the future too
While I’m trying to plan what next I’ll do
I’m trying to raise my dreams up high
I’m trying not to lose my head in the sky
I’m trying to believe in myself most of all
I’m trying NOT to believe that I’ll inevitably fall.

The White

By Aarron Mondello

26/11/2017

The fog rolls over
And covers the town
Filtering light
And changing sounds

I leave my home
And walk in the White
In peaceful solitude
Feeling alone this night

The air feels heavy
Almost like I can touch it
Moisture forms on my clothes
In sparkling droplets

The eeriness flares up
My imagination
Voices and sounds
In strange amplifications

All my senses perverted
My vision subverted
My mind instantly rejects
Anything that’s expected

Footsteps behind me?
Or the echo of my own?
Someone whispering secrets?
Or am I alone?

The White is alive
Altering sound
Bringing shadows brooding
Looming all around

My heart is beating
Speeding, palpitating
The thrill of not knowing
Is intoxicating

Where moments before
The White was relaxing
Now fear and thoughts
Are combining, reacting

A turn, an unknown
Just another in The White
Of a multitude that
Bolster your fright

There, a comfort!
A gnarly old tree
Around whose trunk
Dance a child’s memories

Then a wave
Upon a shore
Washes the White’s fear
Away once more

Shoulders rolling
Cool breeze blowing
The White is calming
My heart is slowing

The fog thins
Slowly dissipating
And I walk home
In a world just waking

Just a simple story

By Aarron Mondello

25/11/2017

I feel like I need
A small story to tell
I don’t want my head cluttered
I don’t want to dwell
On a million little details
Or a thousand made up quotes
Just a simple little fairy tale
One that kind of floats
Easily off the tongue
Like a feather in the mind
Just a little story to
Tell the children at bedtimes

Perhaps an adventure
About a curious kitten
Or lonely little child
And the bird with which they’re smitten

Maybe there’s a cheeky wolf cub
Learning how to hunt
Or a boy who flies on a plane
With the pilot up the front

Possibly a little girl
Finds a unicorn
With a shimmering coat of fur
And a magic golden horn

Or what about a sail boat
That held a beating heart
Deep inside its cargo hold
With which it would not part

So many little fairy tales
Floating like a song
The rhythm of imagination
Is the ballad they sail upon.

Goodbye Kiss

By Aarron Mondello

24/11/2017

She kissed me
If indeed a kiss it was
Her lips briefly rest upon
My own

Our hearts beat in time
Just for a moment it seems
Her lips jolting sparking
In my soul

And when she laid a hand
Upon my chest, I swear
All heaven’s angels sang
To me

Then she stepped away
And I fell ashamed
At the sudden surging lust
And greed

I want her skin on mine
Softly touching her heaving breasts
As our bodies intertwined
Become one

Just bare seconds in the day
Not even a fraction of our lives
Before she pulled her lips away
From mine

From where she stood
A pace back from me
I could smell her scent
So sweet

Them she smiled sadly
At my eyes and bent
To grab her bag and turned
Away from me

And now she has gone
No more angles I hear sing
For the road has taken her far
From me
