Memories of a place

By Aarron Mondello

6/12/2017

It’s funny how a place
Can bring clarity of the mind
Sent across the ages
From a Once Upon A Time

Walking through this place
I’m assaulted by the past
Some memories I wish would fade
Some I’m glad still last

As the winds blow up a song
A ode to yesteryear
I realise I no longer belong
In any space around here

Familiar faces seen
Staring right through me
I’ve outgrown this place
And it’s moved on from me

And where once I thought
Coming here would leave me
Anxious and distraught
I am feeling light and free

For in this place of the past
My heart no longer rests
And while my memories here will last
I like my hearts new home the best.

A message to a stranger

By Aarron Mondello

4/12/2017

Yesterday I was the bus with my two young daughters (aged 11 and 8) and my brother. An indigenous man got on the bus not long after us. One of my daughters was sitting behind me and when I turned to talk to her he began abusing me and my brother for being racist and disrespectful towards him.

Let’s get this straight, as far as I am concerned, the colour of you skin means fuck all. I don’t care about your race, religion, background or past, of you’re a danger to my children I’ll seek to extract them.

Late last night I became very angry (and ashamed at myself if I’m honest) at the man who took it upon himself to terrify my kids and I and I wrote him a message.

This is not a racial slur or an attempt to vilify a race. This purely how I felt about what happened and the man involved.

A message to a stranger

You’re yelling at me about the injustice
Suffered by your kin
But here’s a thought and just for a moment
Maybe you could fucking listen
To the words of the people just trying to get by
The people who have done you no wrong
But no! Your to busy feigning to cry
And singing the the same rehashed song
As a hundred before you who were treated like shit
I get it you bloody mad
I would be to if I’d suffered like you
But wait a second, I have!
Beaten and ridiculed shamed and rejected
Reviled and then stepped upon
And here i sit and yes I’m pissed off
But only at those who did me wrong
It’s not my fault so many don’t care
You just singled me out of the crowd
I don’t even know why perhaps just because I was there
But your actions were oh so wrong
You terrified my kids
And if I’m being honest, I was pretty scared too
But take a step back and look at the picture
Because I have done nothing to you
I write this down the things I am feeling
Towards an abusive stranger
The angry young man who while I was I traveling
Made me feel like I was in real danger
I mean, seriously bloke look at yourself
Abusing a family just because you can
Just like you I can’t choose my skin tone
It’s not my fault I was born a white man
And my children! They have done even less than I
Innocent and learning with you as an example
Accusing me of teaching them to be racist
You’re lesson was more than ample
You think I’m the one teaching them to fear you
While unleashing your anger so pure
In those ten minutes you taught them more than I
And it wasn’t to respect you at all
Did I ask them to move away from your anger
Yeah I did but it wasn’t because of your colour
I would have got them to move out of your harms way
Regardless of your colour
How do you think they felt as you threatened
To kidnap them or beat up their dad
What kind of image do you think they’ll now see
After you leaned across them to slap my face
Is your hatred of me justified?
Hell no it isn’t
Because what harm have I actually caused
None to you or any of your people
We were just a family on the same bus
So you’ll never read this and I don’t care
The ether can have my message
Because the way you acted as I sat with my daughters
Has caused irreparable damage
To the way my kids now view your kin
You want to know why some of us fear?
It comes from people like you.

The Serpent

By Aarron Mondello

3/12/2017

The fork tongued serpent
With poison speech
Never repentant
As it seeks
To pour sickly honey
In your ears
And gain your loyalty
Through your fears
Spiting viscous lies
From its lips
While in disguise
It calmly sits
Feigning intentions
Pure and true
There will not be redemption
When it’s through
You’ll cast aside
Those close and dear
And draw the poison
Serpent near
Finally when
You’re brought down low
It’ll shed it’s skin
And let you know
It takes great delight
In your fall from grace
So stay vigilant for
The Serpents Face.

Thus end Man

By Aarron Mondello

30/11/2017

The dead shall rise
From the bowels of the earth
Putrid and rotting
Shambling forth
And the demons will come
Torturing man
Merciless and ravaging
Salting the land
The skies will grow dark
The earth will shake
And in the black depths
The new king will awake
Under his punishing reign
No green things will grow
No more what you reap
Shall you now sow
For now the devil
Rules from hell
This world gone dark
Where we dwell
Factions will fight
Against the hordes
Factions will fall
In ruthless onslaught
Evil will rule
Time without end
Thus has ended
The age of men.

What would you do?

By Aarron Mondello

29/11/2017

What would you do
If you woke up one day
To find all you’d known
Had been spirited away

All of your family and friends
In some unknown place
No where to be seen
Not one familiar face

Only strangers eyes
Everywhere that you walk
Each one as lifeless
As body outlined in chalk

Even the houses you pass
Look different and strange
Did god reach down from the clouds
And your world rearrange

Would you search for your family
Would you look for your friends
Or would you mourn then accept
Your old life has come to an end

Now what would you do
If you woke up one night
Tied to a cold table
With no one in sight

A light flickering weak
Yellow above your head
A small bench to the left
Fills you with dread

A scalpel and forceps
A knife and a hook
To terrified to stare
But where else do you look

A figure appears
At the edge of the gloom
Blood spatters their apron
Looking like roses in bloom

What would you do
When they pick up the knife
Would you hope to go quietly
Or beg for your life

Tell me what would you do
If one sunny afternoon
You happen to look up
And saw a crack in the moon

The tides would crazy
Without their guiding hand
Looters and violence
Ravage the land

All morals thrown out
It’s now flight or fight
In this destructive new world
Only meanest survive

The weak are cast down
And ruled over as slaves
Bent, broken and used
For the rest of their days

Would you fight to survive
And kill to remain on your feet
Would you live as property
Or one of the “elite”

Now just once more I ask
What would you do
If you looked about yourself
To find all your dreams had come true

Terror and fear
Still thriving abroad
But in your perfect kingdom
You are the lord

No goal is there left
You’ve achieved them all
Testaments to your success
Adorned every wall

Would a feeling so hollow
Spread through your chest
Now all your dreams have come true
There’s not one of them left

Would you relax and enjoy
The kingdom you’ve built
Would you see those less fortunate
And feel any guilt

How would you cope
If your life suddenly changed
Adapt or accept
Or madness deranged.

Unrequited Love

By Aarron Mondello

28/11/2017

She weeps alone
He sees there
Sitting upon
Her well of tears
For each of the
Glistening gems
That fall from her eyes
Drop into the depths
There they form
A sparkling pool
While he spies from hiding
Like a fool
And watches her
Falling tears
Watches her
Succumb to fears
Fears that he
Could never guess
Fears that cause
Her souls unrest
With a wordless cry
She throws herself
After her tears
Into the well
He doesn’t think
Or stop to dwell
He just follows her
Into the well
Together falling
Though far apart
She hears him calling
Out to her heart
And there they stay
Falling still
Until a day
One of them will
Confess to other
An undying love
Only then will they
Return above
The darkened tunnel
Of unrequited love.

I’m Trying

By Aarron Mondello

27/11/2017

I’m trying to see a different view
Here’s a little bit of what I’m trying to do
I’m trying get my work out there
I’m trying to act like I’m not scared
I’m to show rejection is fine
I’m trying to share these worlds of mine
I’m trying to show a side of me
One that no one before has seen
I’m trying to let him out the cage
Where he’s lived all along, the solitary sage
I’m trying believe in the road I travel
I’m trying to prepare in case it unravels
I’m trying to see the future too
While I’m trying to plan what next I’ll do
I’m trying to raise my dreams up high
I’m trying not to lose my head in the sky
I’m trying to believe in myself most of all
I’m trying NOT to believe that I’ll inevitably fall.

Sleeping, Creeping, Secrets Keeping

By Aarron Mondello

26/11/2017

The monsters that are creeping
In your dreams while you are sleeping
Slow you, you are weakening
And their strangle hold is deepening

They hunt you through the night
Through your internal plight
You’re too scared to turn and fight
So you keep running for your life

But all the while you’re sleeping
All the while you’re weeping
As these monsters are revealing
All the secrets you’ve been keeping

Somewhere alarm bells ringing
Someone somewhere is singing
Unknown you are flinging
Yourself into waking

Another night has passed you by
Another night of hidden lies
And monsters who truly spy
What lies within your fractured mind.

The White

By Aarron Mondello

26/11/2017

The fog rolls over
And covers the town
Filtering light
And changing sounds

I leave my home
And walk in the White
In peaceful solitude
Feeling alone this night

The air feels heavy
Almost like I can touch it
Moisture forms on my clothes
In sparkling droplets

The eeriness flares up
My imagination
Voices and sounds
In strange amplifications

All my senses perverted
My vision subverted
My mind instantly rejects
Anything that’s expected

Footsteps behind me?
Or the echo of my own?
Someone whispering secrets?
Or am I alone?

The White is alive
Altering sound
Bringing shadows brooding
Looming all around

My heart is beating
Speeding, palpitating
The thrill of not knowing
Is intoxicating

Where moments before
The White was relaxing
Now fear and thoughts
Are combining, reacting

A turn, an unknown
Just another in The White
Of a multitude that
Bolster your fright

There, a comfort!
A gnarly old tree
Around whose trunk
Dance a child’s memories

Then a wave
Upon a shore
Washes the White’s fear
Away once more

Shoulders rolling
Cool breeze blowing
The White is calming
My heart is slowing

The fog thins
Slowly dissipating
And I walk home
In a world just waking

Chemical Crutches

By Aarron Mondello

21/11/2017

Poison sludge under the skin
These chemical crutches
Lives are ruined from within
Reliance clutches
Scratching digging deepening
It’s hold on the broken
And the weeping
Never sleeping
Eating away their courage
They aren’t there
They no longer sing
These chemical crutches
Reign supreme
Loved ones watch and stare
In a darkened dream
As these chemical crutches
Slowly win
And those we love are forever changed
Those we love are forever maimed
Digging deeper always scratching
Are the chemical crutches of our addiction.

I think it’s a safe bet that we all know someone battling addiction in some way. Whether it’s cigarettes (like me) or a harder and deadlier substance (like someone I used to be close to) addiction is real and can destroy lives.

Help those that want it. Addiction can be a cage.
